At Odette Lunettes, eyewear is more than just a style statement, it is a canvas for expression and storytelling. Odette Lunettes’ collaboration with Bas Smets merges their ability to transform intangible meaning into tangible frames with his unique vision of nature. The resulting collection transposes the experience of a forest walk into a pair of shades.
The Understory // BAS SMETS edition
We invited engineer, architect, and landscape designer Bas Smets to translate his vision of nature into wearable eyewear. Smets is worldwide renowned for his highly innovative approach in the creation of urban landscapes. In each of his projects, he brings an authentic experience of nature into the dense city fabric.
For this collaboration, he proposes to reenact the feeling of a walk in the forest in a pair of sunglasses. Forest bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, is a Japanese practice that invites you to reconnect with nature through an immersive experience that reduces stress, enhances clarity, and restores balance.
The experience of forest bathing is heightened by the unique green light found in the understory, beneath the canopy of trees. Leaves absorb all wavelengths of light except green, creating a soothing and distinctive atmosphere.
For the Understory Collection, we developed a specific shade of green glass to recreate this immersive sensation. The temples are crafted from multiple layers of transparent, biodegradable green fabric, mirroring the way sunlight filters through leaves.
The Understory sunglasses bring the feeling of being in the forest into your daily life, offering immediate access to nature, anytime, anywhere.
The beautiful green acetate used in this frames is Bioplastic. This material is a sustainable and it’s an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastics. We are ensuring that your eyewear is both stylish and responsible.
By choosing this frame you are wearing the change. You’re not only elevating your style but also supporting a greener future, aligning perfectly with the nature-inspired vision of the collection.
